Lets keep our animals safe in 2025

In 2024, over 130 animals, predominantly cats, fell from heights, and sadly, many of their owners never stepped forward to claim them. These are only the cases reported to the SPCA and there are likely to be many more.

In November alone, we attended to 13 cases of cats falling from height. Six of these cats succumbed to their injuries before they could receive medical help.

Each fall brings heartbreak. When owners do come forward, they are left distraught, grieving, and filled with regret as they witness what could have been prevented. Many do not even come forward to claim their pets. Our rescue officers and even kind-hearted strangers put their own safety at risk trying to save a fallen cat from the edge of a ledge.

The truth is, this did not have to happen. A simple, inexpensive precaution, like meshing gates and windows, can save their lives and give us peace of mind.

At the SPCA, we allocate significant resources to assist animals affected by High-Rise Syndrome (HRS). However, these funds, generously donated by the public, could have been directed towards preventing and alleviating suffering in situations that are less avoidable.

A small step, like meshing your gates and windows, can make all the difference.
Lets do better for our pets in 2025.
