What was the most unexpected thing that happened during your volunteering experience?
Covid. More specifically, PKP (haha). In all seriousness, having to carry out my volunteering hours in the midst of multiple lockdowns proved to be quite challenging. Everything felt so unprecedented and uncertain, but it taught me to make the most out of my circumstances and adapt to different situations.
Which RASMA activity or task pushed you out of your comfort zone the most?
While conducting our community cleanups in KDCF, we would also try to educate the general public about keeping the area clean and not feeding the wildlife. As an introvert who tends to shy away from confrontation, it took a lot of courage to go up to strangers and convince them that feeding the monkeys white bread and junk food was bad for their health!
How has RASMA changed the way you see the environment or wildlife?
Even though Ive always been an animal-lover, I had somehow always assumed that you could only make real change if you were a scientist or researcher. I realised through RASMA that you can contribute in all sorts of ways - through ideas, creative talents, even sparking conversations.
Whats one myth about volunteering that youd like to debunk?
Volunteering is a one-off thing. It doesnt have to be! Even though I graduated nearly 5 years ago, I still feel deeply connected with the RASMA family. It has presented so many exciting opportunities to me, and Im excited to help empower the next cohort of RASMA leaders!
