Describe RASMA in 3 words.
I would describe as purposeful, committed, and passionate.
What was the most unexpected thing that happened during your volunteering experience?
I never imagined witnessing sea turtles laying eggs, spotting a Sunda Colugo at eye level, and getting up close with Bornean Sun Bears during a health check. Im in awe of these incredible creatures.
Whats one wildlife species you learned about during RASMA that fascinated you, and why?
Red giant flying squirrel. Ive been working with this species for a week observing their behavior, recording data, and tracking them with satellite collars. By the end of the week, I could tell them apart based on their unique behavior and appearance. Theyre the largest of all flying squirrels, with big, round eyes that help them see in the dark, as theyre highly nocturnal. They dont actually fly but glide from tree to tree using a flap of skin between their limbs-kind of like a built-in parachute. Cool, isnt it?
Whats one piece of advice youd give to new RASMA participants?
Exploring new things is always exciting you never know what youll learn or who youll become. Just take that step, and maybe youll find how you can give something good back to the world.
