WWF-Malaysias Sabah Landscapes Programme initiated a courtesy visit with Sabah Mineral Management (SMM) Sdn Bhd. The WWF-Malaysia group was led by Dr. Robecca Jumin, Head of Conservation Sabah, and was also joined by Tuan Adrian Rawlenes from the Sabah Forestry Department. The group received a warm welcome by the SMM management team, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Natasha Sim.
The courtesy visit to SMM is to express concern on mining activities within the Tawau-Kunak landscapes. These priority landscapes, while rich with valuable minerals, also serve as a crucial water catchment area for Tawau residents as well as wildlife habitat. To ensure that sensitive priority areas continue to be protected, WWF-Malaysia is also advocating for the development of responsible mining guidelines for the mining industry.
The Sabah Landscapes Programme adopts the Living Landscape Approach, which provides an integrating framework that combines conservation and sustainable development under the three pillars of protect, produce and restore: protection of forests, wildlife and rivers; sustainable production of palm oil; as well as restoration of ecological corridors and riparian reserves. WWF-Malaysia is looking to engage with local mining authorities in an open dialogue to discuss the pros and cons of mining and the importance of avoiding sensitive ecosystems and protected areas.
