Just sharing this from a Rescue group overseas but applicable here. Give them time!! The UK is becoming increasingly intolerant of dogs.
Step out of line oncegrowl, one minor bite, bark, snap, pulland youre done.
Youre dumped.
Returned to rescue.
Sent back to where you came from.
Or worseeuthanised.
This is the reality for so many dogs today. Not because they are broken. Not because they are dangerous. But because theyre misunderstood. Because they dared to show fear, stress, trauma, or confusion in a world that expects instant perfection.
And its getting worse.
We are living in a culture of quick fixes and zero tolerance. If a dog doesnt immediately behave or fit in, theyre written off.
We want the Instagram-ready dogbut not the messy bits.
Not the decompression.
Not the learning curve.
Not the late-night tears or the early-morning setbacks.
But heres the truth: rescue takes time.
It takes understanding, commitment, and compassion.
You cant rescue a dog and expect them to slot into your life like theyve always been there. They need space. Patience. The freedom to feel safe before they can succeed.
They need YOUto be strong when they cant be.
To learn their language, not force them to speak ours.
To love them through it, not just when its convenient.
We make mistakes.
We lash out.
We shut down when were scared or overwhelmed.
And we expect dogs to be better than us?
When people are perfect, then we can expect the same from dogs.
Until then, we owe them our patience.
Our effort.
Our willingness to try.
At Forget Me Not Reading Rescues, we know its not easy.
Were not asking people to be perfectwere asking them to stay.
To show up.
To support, not abandon.
Because every time a dog is returned, rejected, or put to sleep for simply strugglingits not just a failure for that dog. Its a failure of us, as a society, to hold space for vulnerability.
We want to see a shift.
Towards compassion.
Towards education.
Towards realistic expectations of what rescue truly means.
Were here for the dogs who dont have anywhere else to go.
Well keep fighting for them.
But we cant do it alone.
If youre thinking about rescuingcome prepared.
Prepared to grow.
Prepared to learn.
Prepared to truly be there.
Because rescue isnt always a fairytale.
But it can be the most beautiful story youll ever be part ofif you let it be.
