Veterinarian in charge: Dr Maria Syafiqah Ghazali
Blood recipient (patient) breed and weight: Labrador, 29.3kg
Recipient Diagnosis: Babesiosis, HCT 9%
Criteria for becoming blood donor
1. Weighing minimum 25kg and above, can transfuse 18ml/kg = 450ml
2. Healthy - no blood parasite (hence the needs to be screened 4Dx test)
3. No concurrent illness - related to organ function
4. Less than 10 years old
For Donor's pet-parents: To expect the need to use sedation / general anesthesia during blood collection, if the donor-patient is not cooperative during handling/blood collection due fear, anxiety and stress. Expectation as below:
(a) To come walk-in to AMC (please liase with the owner of patient)
(b) We are going to take 1ml of blood from your pet (<5mins) to run diagnostic and
cross-matching which will take 1 hour for processing from our laboratory team
(c) After the result - if matched - we going to call your dog in
(d) Put an IV port (for administration of sedation - if needed)
(e) Blood collectionn at jugular area (will take around 15mins if being cooperative)
Note: Sedation in veterinary patients are encouraged to reduce multiple puncture
and to reduce fear-anxiety-stress related to hospital-procedure
Amount of blood required: 450ml
Expected date of collection: 27 June 2025, Friday
Treatment of blood donor post-transfusion:
(a) Subcutaneous fluid 30ml/kg
(b) Folic acid 1tab, 1x/daily for 10 days
(c) Pre-screening: CBC, total protein, 4Dx test, cross matching with recipient
