We've seen some comments on our Facebook page questioning usasking how an animal shelter could put an event before a life, whether the event was more important than Ah Fei's life.
We don't want to defend ourselves. We just want to say this, and to help everyone understandwe started this shelter in 2005, and over twenty years later, we are still committed to being a shelter that does not euthanize.
Ah Fei was over ten years old. Deep down, we knew it was saying goodbye to us. Saying we wanted to take it to the vet was more about us not wanting to let gohoping it could hold on a little longer. It left very quietly, without suffering. That, at least, is some comfort. We cared for it its entire life. Its passing hurts us more than anyone.
We did run events these past two days, but they were never about "making a scene." They were about promoting adoption over buying, and about raising fundsevery cent goes toward food, medical care, and daily needs for over 1,700 lives.
Every day, we face: sick animals needing medical attention, the never-ending burden of sourcing food, countless calls and messages to answer, arrange, and follow up on, injured strays waiting to be rescued, and so many small, tedious things that are too numerous to list.
And most of this falls on just a few volunteers who work tirelessly outside. They receive no pay, no subsidies. They give up their personal time, and often have to cover expenses out of their own pockets.
We do have other volunteers helping, but they all have full-time jobsthey can only come on Sundays or their days off. We are deeply grateful for their contributions to the shelter, and we know they've given their all. But the reality is, we never have enough hands. We hope more volunteers can join us to help the animals here.
We would love to hire more people to share the workload but the truth is, we simply can't afford it.
So if you've ever visited the shelter and remember Ah Fei, or if you'd like to do something for these animals come volunteer, or share this post. Either way, it helps.
Ah Fei spent its whole life walking alongside us. It's gone now, but over 1,700 animals are still here at the shelter, waiting for us to keep going.
We hope for your understanding and continued support. Thank you, everyone.
