When she was a little kitten in the wild, Cleo once came out from where she was hiding and rubbed herself against me, begging to be taken off the streets. She was not meant to be a stray. No cat seemed less disposed for it. I didn't take her off the street immediately. A house full of other cats made this seem like an irresponsible option, although I did start to bring cat food down for her. Even as a stray, she had refined tastes. No cheap wet food for her!

I eventually took her off the street to keep and foster when little as she was, she got pregnant. I wanted to take her out of the cold and keep her until she gave birth and her kittens were adopted. She gave birth to two - Rascal (also featured here) and Butterball, who was snapped up when he was three months old.

Taking Cleo in was both an act of compassion and an experiment. I wanted to see if with loads of good food, play and love, she would produce premium kittens, while improving herself.

She did. I had to upgrade the food for all my cats because Cleo's refined tastes became even more refined. I plied her with fish oil (until she learned to hide from me) and her fur became soft and lovely.

And when it was time to give birth, her kittens were super large (thanks to all the good feeding) and she had difficulty pushing them out. But she was stoic and steadfast and only required for me to be present, my hand stroking her back and cheering her on.

After the ordeal she hopped on the bed to give me a thank you lick before going back to her kittens. I can't even tell you what a good mother she was. I made sure she had nothing to worry about and was fed as much as she wanted, so she had nothing to do but look after those kittens. And boy, was she protective!

I wanted to keep both with her until they were at least three months, so they could have their mother's full love and attention for that time. Also, I knew that these were the last kittens Cleo would ever have, so I wanted her to enjoy the full measure of motherhood.

I had her spayed a while ago, but am only now putting her up for adoption because naturally, she wormed her way into my heart. However, as I live in a tiny apartment, already overcrowded with cats, I don't think it's fair to either her or the other cats to keep her.
